Angel Santos Suarez, burnished figurines [sold]

Burnished clay horse and cow by acknowleged master of the craft, Angel Santos. Each piece is signed and dated with the special 'nahual' maker's mark (pictured below) that Sr Santos reserves for his most important artistic works.

These two forms are intentionally related to earlier precedents in the rich history of Tonala ceramics. Sr Santos graciously shared with us his private collection of antique figurines from famous artisans such as Candelario Medrano. He is very conscious of his place in the tradition, and created both these figures with that in mind.

Brunido ware is famed for its buttery smooth surface texture. This is achieved by very careful preparation of the clay itself, and by patient burnishing with wet stones once the figure is created. Sr Santos' painted decoration is second to none in its fineness of line, and artistic detail.

[sold] Both pieces are about 6"L x 2"W x 5-6"H, signed and dated with the 'nahual' mark on the base, and available here as separate pieces or as a pair for a slight discount. They are both marked by grey blemishes, which unfortunately bloomed within the clay after exposure to our extremely humid climate in Houston - the figures are priced accordingly.
