Oaxacan carving, Cheetah [sold]

[sold] As Oaxacan woodcarving matures as a craft, some artisans are moving away from subjects of pure whimsy, and toward ambitiously realistic forms. Here we have a carving of an alerted Cheetah, signed A. Playas. The beautiful color and stylized spots recall the work of the famous Jimenez family. The cat's pose, with his head dramatically craned 180 degrees around, emphasizes the graceful carving as much as the rich coloration. The famous speed of the animal is cleverly represented by the reflexive snap of the head, with long limbs and tail poised for quick flight. 8"H x 11"L x 3"w. Detail views below. Mexico. 145
